
Design Support Engineer
DDC Dolphin is a leading global manufacturing company based in Poole, Dorset. We are increasing our product range based upon the success of current products and are currently seeking a Design Support Engineer.
You will be diverse in your capabilities from establishing technical & regulatory requirement, through design and specification, and ultimately test and verification. You will work closely with Project Management, Sales, Service, Quality, Purchasing and Production teams to ensure a compliant product is realised in a timely manner.

The Role:
You will be working within the engineering team where a hands-on approach is necessary. The successful candidate should work well under pressure, while being required to handle multiple projects to tight deadlines.
The candidate will be required to support the Design, Production and Purchasing teams. They will help to setup assembly processes by means of layout and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) for product build and required equipment training.
They will be involved in Q/A procedures to improve quality through the means of testing and implantation into the current product range. The candidate be required to make changes to current manufacturing engineering part and sub-assembly drawings and flow the normal change note processes.
The job role would suit someone who has an all-round knowledge of engineering across all disciplines and likes a challenging engineering role. You will be an integral part of the growth of our Company.
Key duties:
- Creating new designs and improving existing.
- Support design and engineering activities of the business.
- Q/A procedures, build documentation, checking/sign off documents.
- Design changes (ECN).
- Product and prototype testing, sign off improvements and implantation.
- Updating and changes to existing engineering drawings.
- Checking and passing first off parts for manufacture and maintain product quality.
- Involved in cost down exercises.
- Supporting product data and documentation for inclusion in our central Technical Management System used for all supporting services.
- Supplier visits and approval.
- Generation of an accurate CAD BoM and support and maintenance of the company MRP BoM (Navision)
- Design and execution of experiments, validation and verification activities to support concepts, simulation activities, and validate performance.
- Compile Reports to substantiate design and support future developments.
- Design and configuration of software to suit specific applications and product improvements would be advantage.
Skills & Experience:
- HND/Degree in Design Engineering minimum.
- At least 5 years’ experience working in a Design Engineering role.
- Understanding and have the ability to create supporting manufacturing documentation, i.e., build manuals and Q/A procedures and sign off.
- A basic understanding of electrical and electromechanical design, with experience of loom design, drives and controls would be an advantage.
- Understanding of product testing and QA procedures.
- Fault finding, electrical and mechanical.
- Have experience of working in a drawing office and procedures.
- Experienced CAD (Inventor, Solidworks, etc.) and assembly user with experience of product and system designs incorporating Rotating assemblies, fluid handling, electro-mechanical components, electronic control systems, Sheet metal design, Injection moulding and casting.
- Must be confident in the generation of manufacturing and inspection drawings to BS8888. Understanding of the need and application of GD&T, and appropriate use of tolerances to minimise part costs whilst maintaining functional compliance.
- Good communication skills and ability to work with all levels of staff across every department.
- Appreciation of the importance and practical application of Design for Manufacture (DfM) and demonstrable experience of working with manufacturers both internal and external.
- Good practical mechanical aptitude, fault finding, root cause assessment.
- Good decision maker and excellent communicator.
- Organised and able to plan and manage own time and workload.
- Good analytical and Excel skills.
- Able to and aware of importance of supporting company quality systems.
- Enthusiastic approach and ‘Can do’ attitude.
- Candidate will be able to work overtime when required to support project demands.
- Able to undertake business travel as required.
- Full driving licence an advantage
